China published the strategic plan “Made in China 2025” in 2015. The plan describes how Chinese industry is to be upgraded to an industrial power. For example, China wants to take over high-tech sectors that are currently run by foreign companies. A total of nine strategic goals were formulated – among them the increase of innovative capacity in the manufacturing industry as well as the promotion of technological breakthroughs. (Source)
The project aims to investigate the significance, structure and effects of external innovation measures in the course of the inorganic corporate development of large Chinese companies. Corporate venture capital and in extension of M&A (merger / purchase of companies / company shares) will be analyzed as a tool for achieving technology leadership key sectors.
The sub-project “Digital Communities of Practice” consists of building a virtual interest group via social media platforms in China. This community will be used to collect data that will subsequently be used in academic analyses on the status quo and practices of corporate venture capital (CVC) in China. To generate data, relevant participants gather in a central digital location and are encouraged to exchange content. For successful exchange, content-related contributions and active moderation are planned.
Ultimately, the German and European innovation and financial system is to be enriched by the expansion of China-competence.

Methods
In the project, a Mixed Methods approach is applied, using different qualitative and quantitative date sources.
After collecting data on the digital community, it will be analysed using both quantitative and qualitative data-driven analysis. The data collected via social media will be analysed and cross-validated with the empirical findings from the venture capital databases and previous research results. -
