With a doctorate in the field of Sustainable and Intelligent Systems, your research will make an important contribution to key future issues in our society. Whether in the field of sustainable processes in business and industry or by developing viable solutions for a livable society: at Aschaffenburg UAS you will conduct applied research in an interdisciplinary team of dedicated scientists.
Together with TH Würzburg-Schweinfurt and Coburg University of Applied Sciences, the NISys doctoral centre offers doctoral candidates optimal starting conditions for challenging doctoral projects. The focus on the application fields of energy and infrastructure systems, mobility as well as production and materials addresses key future topics and offers numerous points of contact for cooperation with industrial companies.
-
Mobility
In the field of mobility applications, we are currently focusing on the following areas, among others
- electromobility
- Sustainable transportation concepts
- Learning transport infrastructure systems
- Connected urban mobility
- Cooperative, automated vehicles
- Intelligent transportation systems
-
Energy and infrastructure systems
The Energy and Infrastructure Systems application field deals with research issues in the following areas
- Renewable energy generation
- Intelligent energy supply networks
- Innovative energy storage systems
- Efficient energy conversion
- Energy-efficient buildings and neighborhoods
- Smart buildings
-
Production and materials
In the Production and Materials application area, our scientists are researching solutions in the following areas
- Resource-efficient production processes
- Laser technology and additive manufacturing
- Automation of production processes
- Functional materials
- Microsystems technology
- Sustainable materials and material recycling
The NISys doctoral centre deepens the successful cooperation between the universities established as part of the joint doctoral college WIKE³.
Our dedicated scientists provide an inspiring research environment thanks to their strong network with companies and research institutions, above-average third-party funding and numerous scientific publications. The particular research strengths of Aschaffenburg UAS in Intelligent Systems, Materials and Clean Tech forms a strong foundation for doctoral projects.
Doctoral students also benefit from our two technology transfer centres. The Technology Transfer Centre for Sustainable Energies NETZ is a breeding ground for new concepts and technologies for the sustainable use of resources, materials and energy in close cooperation with regional companies. The ZeWiS technology transfer centre focuses in particular on doctorates in the fields of materials science, mobility and knowledge management.
With our doctoral college iDok, we also support our doctoral students in their personal and professional development.
The selection of your doctoral topic is based on the specialist areas of the professors involved in the doctoral centre at TH AB.

What are the requirements for a doctorate at the NISys doctoral centre?
The basic requirement for applying for admission to the doctoral center is a successful Master's degree from a HAW or university. Further requirements can be found in the doctoral degree regulations.
Our research advisors will be happy to assist you with your application.
-
What is the difference to the cooperative doctorate at TH AB?
In contrast to a cooperative doctorate, the doctoral regulations of the NISys apply to your doctorate at TH AB. This can simplify the application process for the approval of your doctorate.
While the supervision of a cooperative doctorate must also be carried out by a professor of the participating university, this task can also be assigned within the professorial team at the doctoral centre. This can also simplify your application process.
-
What are the advantages of a doctorate at the doctoral centre?
Doctoral candidates can expect a scientific environment characterized by high-quality research and close supervision at the doctoral center. Over 35 dedicated researchers from the participating universities contribute their extensive experience in supervising doctoral procedures. A qualification concept consisting of four modules also enriches the interdisciplinary training of our doctoral students. Part of this concept are
Module 1: Extracurricular qualification
- Good scientific practice
- Technology assessment, scientific ethics, key qualifications, career development, etc.
Module 2: Professional qualification
- Teaching tasks, progress report, feedback discussions
- Publications, supervision of theses, participation in lectures, Master's modules, etc.
Module 3: Networking
- Doctoral seminar/retreat, external conference
- Organization of events, networking with industry, etc.
Module 4: Internationalization
- Conferences, research stays, promotion of intercultural competence, language course
We will be happy to inform you about the content of the individual training elements.
We would be happy to advise you on the possibilities of a doctorate at TH AB.
